Damage & Lost Items Policy

Normal Wear Is Expected
Davenport is a rental service: items are meant to be worn, and normal wear from ordinary use is expected and does not result in any charge. Our condition-tier system (Pristine, Excellent, Well-Worn, Veteran) already accounts for the fact that rented items accumulate wear over time; that's baked into the pricing, not treated as damage.
What Counts as Chargeable Damage
Damage beyond normal wear includes, but isn't limited to:
Stains that don't come out in standard cleaning
Tears, rips, or holes
Missing buttons, zippers, or other functional hardware
Structural damage (stretched seams, broken closures)
Odors that don't resolve with standard cleaning (e.g., smoke)
Alterations made to the item without Davenport's authorization
How Damage Is Assessed
Every returned item is inspected before it re-enters the rental catalog. If damage beyond normal wear is found, it's assessed and priced per item, based on the cost to repair or the item's remaining rental/resale value if repair isn't possible.
How Damage Charges Work
Damage charges are applied as follows:
Within the hold: damage charges up to $75 are applied against your protection hold.
Beyond the hold: if the assessed damage exceeds $75, the excess is charged to your saved payment method. You authorize this charge by accepting the Rental Terms.
Multiple items: each item in a multi-item order is assessed independently.
Buyout instead of damage charge: for damage severe enough that the item can no longer be safely re-rented, Davenport may charge the item's buyout price instead. You'll be notified in advance.
You will always be given at least 30 days' written notice, with an explanation, before any damage charge beyond your protection hold is applied.
Lost Items
Lost items are handled differently depending on where the loss happens:
Lost in transit back to Davenport: contact support@davenportwardrobe.com with your order number and any shipping confirmation you have. Davenport will work with the carrier to locate the item. If it can't be located, it's treated as non-returned per the Rental Terms' Non-Return and Default section, which may result in a buyout charge for that item.
Lost or misplaced while in your possession: report it in the app or on the website: billing on that item pauses immediately, you get 14 days to find it, and if it turns up you simply resume renting it at no penalty; if it doesn't, it converts to a one-time buyout charge at the item's current buyout price and it's yours to keep.
Disputing a Damage Assessment
If you disagree with a damage assessment, contact support@davenportwardrobe.com within 14 days of being notified. Include any relevant detail. We'll review the assessment and respond with our decision.
Damage on a Trip Plan
Trip Plans don't carry a $75 protection hold (see the Card Hold Policy, section 7), so the "within the hold / beyond the hold" split in section 4 doesn't apply. Any chargeable damage on a Trip Plan piece is assessed the same way as section 3 describes, then charged directly to your saved payment method as its own charge, with the same 30 days' written notice required for anything beyond ordinary wear.
