A Men’s Packing List for a Business Trip

Pack one color family and every piece works with every other piece. For a three-day trip that is one blazer, two pairs of pants and three shirts.

The three-day list

  • One blazer, navy or grey. Wear it on the plane.
  • Two pairs of pants: one dress pant, one chino or five-pocket.
  • Three shirts: two dress shirts and one polo or knit for the dinner or the flight home.
  • One sweater or quarter-zip. Planes and conference rooms are cold.
  • One pair of leather shoes that works with everything, and a belt to match.

Keep it in one color family

Navy, grey and white, with one accent at most. If every shirt works with both pairs of pants and the blazer, three days of clothes gives you a week of combinations and a spare for the spill.

Getting a blazer there unwrinkled

  • Wear it rather than pack it.
  • If you must pack it, turn one shoulder inside out, tuck the other into it, and fold once over the top of the bag.
  • Hang it in the bathroom during a hot shower when you arrive.

Or do not pack at all

Davenport can ship a trip wardrobe to your hotel: you build the list, set your dates, wear it and ship it back. See Business Trips for how it works.
