Business Casual for Men, Explained
Business casual means a collar and real pants, without the suit and tie. Everything else is detail.
What counts
- Tops: dress shirts, button-downs, polos, fine-gauge sweaters and quarter-zips over a collar.
- Layers: an unstructured blazer or a knit blazer. Optional most days, useful for meetings.
- Pants: dress pants, chinos and five-pocket pants in a dressy fabric.
- Shoes: leather shoes, loafers, or clean minimal leather sneakers where the office allows them.
What does not
- T-shirts, hoodies and joggers.
- Ripped or faded denim. Dark denim is fine in some offices, so look around before you assume.
- Athletic sneakers and sandals.
A week of business casual
- Monday: blazer, light blue dress shirt, grey dress pants.
- Tuesday: polo, navy chinos.
- Wednesday: crewneck sweater over a button-down, five-pocket pants.
- Thursday: dress shirt, dress pants, quarter-zip for the cold conference room.
- Friday: polo or henley under an overshirt, chinos.
That is about seven pieces. Rotate them and nobody will notice you are repeating.
Starting an internship or a first job
You do not know yet what your office really wears, so buying a full wardrobe before day one is a gamble. Renting the core pieces for the first month lets you see what people wear, keep what you actually reach for, and send the rest back.
