What to Wear to Fraternity Rush, Chapter and Formal

Rush gets dressier every round. Start in a polo, end in a suit, and you are never out of step.

Social fraternity rush

  • Open house and first rounds: a polo or a casual button-down, chinos, clean shoes.
  • Invite rounds: a button-down with dress pants or chinos. Add a blazer if the house says dressy.
  • Final round and bid night dinners: a blazer and tie, or a suit if the chapter asks for one.

Business fraternity recruitment

Professional fraternities run recruitment like a job search. Info nights are usually business casual. Interviews and final rounds are business professional: a suit, a dress shirt and a tie. Treat it exactly like an interview.

Chapter and initiation

Most chapters call for a blazer or a suit, a white shirt and a tie. If you wear the same pieces every week, fit and a pressed shirt matter more than variety.

Formal and date parties

Formal means a suit. Navy and charcoal work anywhere; lighter suits work for spring formals. Coordinate a tie or pocket square with your date if they ask, and nothing else.

One semester, not one purchase

Rush, initiation and formal can all land in the same few months, and then the suit sits in a dorm closet. Renting a blazer or suit by the month covers the stretch you need it for, and you can send it back or buy it when the semester ends.
